When I was in high school, I had an idea for our school newspaper. I envisioned a column — called Christine’s Corner — where I could write a fun little item once a month or so. Fun but not a lot of work.
I guess I was thinking about a social diary type column where I might write about the celebrities of Midland Avenue CI.
The editor had another idea. He convinced me that I really wanted to be a reporter on the paper. Just a column would be too boring. The next year he convinced me that I really really wanted to be the deputy editor. And since it was his last year (he was in grade 13 and I was in grade 12) he really really wanted to make sure the paper had an editor the next year. Smart guy. I joined him the next year in journalism school. I probably would not have been accepted if not for my time on the paper…
I never did become a journalist and that’s probably for the best. But I did get Christine’s Corner.
