Streetcar often drivers ding their bells when they pass each other. Sometimes they wave as well and they also are likely to chat if the cars are stopped. I try to eavesdrop if I can but the conversations are never scintillating.
Do streetcar drivers ding their bells if they dislike (or feel indifferent to) the operator coming in the opposite direction? I think yes. The ding is a greeting — much like good morning — and a response is almost autonomous. But I bet the ones who wave and chat are friends.
Sometimes I wish I could drive a streetcar. The idea of driving around downtown with no lane changing is very appealing. Plus, I would love to get up each morning knowing exactly what I needed to wear. I would ding at all my friends all day long.
